Antioxidants

Types of Antioxidant Supplements:

Antioxidants are molecules that neutralise free radicals (unstable molecules that can harm our cells) in our bodies. Our body needs to maintain a certain balance between free radicals and Antioxidants. When this equilibrium is disrupted, it can lead to oxidative stress. Uncontrolled oxidative stress can accelerate the ageing process and may contribute to the development of a number of conditions.

There are two types of dietary Antioxidants: Water-soluble and fat-soluble Antioxidants

  • Water-soluble Antioxidants perform their functions in the fluid inside and outside cells (in water).
  • Fat-soluble Antioxidants act primarily in cell membranes (in fat / lipid).

Important dietary Antioxidants include:

Vitamin C: This is an important water-soluble antioxidant needed for the growth and repair of tissues in all parts of your body. It is used to form Collagen, an important protein used to make skin, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels.

Vitamin E: This is a fat-soluble Antioxidant that plays a critical role in protecting cell membranes against oxidative damage.

Flavonoids: (Plant antioxidants) help regulate cellular activity and fight off free radicals that cause oxidative stress on your body.
