PMS refers to the physical, emotional, and behavioural symptoms that some women experience in the days leading up to their Menstrual Cycle (Period). These symptoms can vary widely in severity and duration. Common physical symptoms of PMS include bloating, breast tenderness, fatigue, headaches, and cramping, while emotional symptoms can include mood swings, irritability, anxiety, and depression. While PMS is a common experience for many menstruating women, some women may experience more severe symptoms that are classified as Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD).
The 5 Subgroups of PMS
PMS can be divided into five subgroups based on the predominant symptoms that a woman experiences:
- PMS-A (Anxiety): This subgroup is characterised by symptoms such as anxiety, nervousness, irritability, and mood swings.
- PMS-C (Cravings): This subgroup is characterised by symptoms such as food cravings, especially for sweet or salty foods, and changes in appetite.
- PMS-D (Depression): This subgroup is characterised by symptoms such as depression, low mood, and feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness.
- PMS-H (Hyperhydration): This subgroup is characterised by symptoms such as bloating, breast tenderness, and weight gain due to fluid retention.
- PMS-P (Pain): This subgroup is characterised by physical symptoms such as headaches, joint or muscle pain, and gastrointestinal symptoms.
Not all women with PMS will fit neatly into one of these subgroups, and some women may experience symptoms from multiple subgroups or symptoms that do not fit into any of these categories. Additionally, some women may experience more severe symptoms that are classified as Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD).
The main clinical differences of PMDD are:
- The number of symptoms.
- The intensity of symptoms.
- The inclusion of one psychological symptom such as depression, mood swings, etc.
