Opti-CAL could be of benefit for โ
- Early Supplementation โ Peak Bone Mass
- Bone Building
- Fractures and Breaks
- Osteopenia / Osteoporosis
- Arterial Calcification
- Chronic Medication which depletes Calcium
Opti-CAL is a Comprehensive Calcium and Collagen Combination Supplement. Opti-CALย contains Calcium, Magnesium, 1ย 000 IU Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2 which all act to Strengthen the Inorganic Bone Matrix as well as Type 1 Hydrolysed Collagen, which enhances the Flexibility of the Organic Bone Matrix.
Most Conventional Calcium Tablets only focus on Bone Strength, but Opti-CAL focuses on both Bone Strength and Flexibility.
Strong Bones can still fracture, shatter and break โฆ.. but Strong and Flexible Bones can help to absorb impact!ย
Since Peak Bone Mass is achieved by the age of 25 to 30 years, it is essential that Women (who are at a higher risk of Osteoporosis) should start taking a Calcium Tablet from their early twenties.ย Early Calcium Supplementation helps to increase Peak Bone Mass to protect your Bones against Osteoporosis and Osteopenia.
The most effective way to prevent Osteoporosis is to supplement from an early age with a combination of Calcium, Magnesium, Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2. ย Weight-bearing exercises are also important because they help to strengthen the muscles that support the bones.
Calcium, Magnesium, Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2 all work synergistically to support the formation and maintenance of Strong Healthy Bones. Opti-CAL contains an added innovative ingredient called Type 1 Hydrolysed Collagen that allows Opti-CAL to not only assist with Bone Strength but also Bone Flexibility. ย The Calcium, Magnesium, Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2 within Opti-CAL act as the โcement or mineral contentโ of the bone, whereas the Type I Hydrolysed Collagen acts like the โsoft scaffoldingโ within the bone, helping the bone to become less brittle, but stronger and more flexible.
Each pack of Opti-CAL contains a:
- 30-day supply of Calcium and Collagen Combination Swallow Tablets
Take one White Calcium and Collagen Combination Tablet at night with Dinner.
Helpful Tips for when taking a Calcium Tablet:
- Calcium is best absorbed at night after a meal.
- When you eat, your stomach becomes more acidic, which helps with breaking down the Calcium in the Calcium Tablet, thus improving its absorption and utilization by the body.
- Calcium also helps to aid in a good nightโs sleep.
- It is not a good idea to take your Calcium Tablet with your Breakfast because most people generally eat a very high fibre breakfast. High fibre can impair calcium absorption by clinging to the Calcium in your Calcium Tablet and impairing its effectiveness.
Calcium & Collagen for Bone Strength and Flexibility
Opti-CAL is more than a Calcium Tablet for bones, it is a Calcium and Collagen Combination Supplement that has been specifically designed to aid in Bone Building Therapy.
Peak Bone Mass is achieved by the age of 25 to 30 years, thus making this the perfect age to start taking a Calcium Supplement as part of your Bone Building Therapy routine.ย
Opti-CAL is unique because it targets both the Organic and Inorganic Matrix of the Bone which means that Opti-CAL focuses not only on Bone Strength, but also on Bone Flexibility.
Why choose Opti-CAL and what are the Benefits?
Opti-CAL contains COLLAGEN –
Collagen is an important constituent in Bone Health because it is one of the main structural proteins of the body acting as a soft scaffolding to absorb impact. Collagen is a constituent of connective tissue providing tensile strength, it is the glue that holds the body together and it gives bones their flexibility.
Opti-CALย specifically contains Type 1 Hydrolysed Collagen (a bioactive form of Collagen). Collagen is essential for Bone Health, in that it gives Bones Flexibility, making up 90% of the Organic Bone Matrix, which makes up 35% of the Total Bone Matrix.
The word โCollagenโ is derived from the Greek Word โKollaโ which means Glue.
Type 1 Hydrolysed Collagen is different from conventional Collagen, in that it is not digested in the stomach but rather absorbed in the small intestine as amino acids and small peptides.
Type 1 Hydrolysed Collagen (also known as Collagen Hydrolysate) is a bioavailable form of collagen, prepared by the enzymatic hydrolysis of collagenous tissue. The absorption of conventional orally ingested collagen that has not been hydrolysed is poor. Collagen hydrolysate provides high levels of amino acids, especially glycine, proline and hydroxyproline.
Bone Health and Anti-Ageing –
As Women, we generally start our Anti-ageing routine with our skincare (exterior) but it is important to note that our Anti-ageing routine should actually start with our bones (interior).
Opti-CAL is a Calcium Supplement designed to aid in Bone Building Therapy. Peak Bone Mass is achieved by the age of 25-30 years. Early Calcium Supplementation increases Peak Bone Mass which may decrease the risk of developing Osteoporosis and Osteopenia in later life.
Opti-CAL also contains other Vitamins and Minerals –
Opti-CAL contains a combination of Calcium, Magnesium, Vitamin D3, Vitamin K2 and Type I Hydrolysed Collagen, as well as other vitamins and minerals essential for the formation and maintenance of Strong and Flexible Bones.
The inclusion of Vitamin K2 in Opti-CAL has two important functions โ
- Vitamin K2 activates osteocalcin which helps calcium to bind to the bone matrix, thus enhancing bone strength; and
- Vitamin K2 activates Matrix GLA Protein which ensures that Calcium is not deposited in the arteries, thus preventing arterial calcification.
Arterial calcification is when Calcium is deposited in the arteries of the body causing arterial stiffening. Arterial stiffening can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease. Thus, it is important to ensure that the calcium supplement that you are taking contains Vitamin K2 for the Calcium to be directed to the bones and not to your soft tissues or arteries.
Magnesium, Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2 –
In life, some things just go better together and in the case of Opti-CAL, the Magnesium, Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2 all just work better together. The Magnesium activates the Vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is then essential for the absorption of Calcium and Vitamin K2 makes sure that the Calcium goes to the correct parts of the body i.e. the Bones.
The Opti-CAL Blisters are contained in a Recyclable Unit Carton.
All the Bovine ingredients (Bovine Collagen) contained in Opti-CALย carry a Halaal certification.
There are two types of Vitamin K: Vitamin K1 and Vitamin K2 –
Vitamin K1 and Vitamin K2 have very different functions in the body and are not the same thing!
- Vitamin K1 is the type of Vitamin K that is found in green leafy vegetables. Vitamin K1 has a key role in helping the blood to clot, thereby preventing excessive bleeding. Taking Vitamin K1 together with your Warfarin is not advisable.
- Vitamin K2 on the other hand has two key roles.ย Vitamin K2 activates Osteocalcin which helps calcium bind to the bone for bone strength, and it activates Matrix GLA protein that helps to prevent arterial calcification. Vitamin K2 does not interfere with Warfarin.
Calcium, Vitamin D3 and Magnesium work better together –
Calcium requires Vitamin D3 for its absorption. Magnesium activates Vitamin D3. So, it is important to supplement Calcium, Vitamin D3 and Magnesium vitamins together. Thus, Magnesium has direct and indirect effects on Osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis and Osteopenia –
Osteoporosis literally means โporous boneโ. It is a silent disease where the bones gradually become weaker and weaker, causing changes in posture and making the individual extremely susceptible to fracture. It is more common in Females (1 in 3) than Males (1 in 5).
Osteopenia: is a condition where the bone density is lower than normal and is generally a precursor to Osteoporosis.
Bone is constantly restoring itself:
- Osteoblasts โ responsible for making Bone.
- Osteoclasts โ responsible for removing old Bone.
ย
When Osteoclast activity exceeds Osteoblast activity, then bones become less dense and more likely to break.
Bone is strongest at the age of around 25 to 30 and then starts to decline. In women, this decline is accelerated at menopause due to decreasing levels of Oestrogen in the body. Oestrogen has a protective effect on bone. Thus, when a woman goes through Menopause, her Oestrogen Levels decrease.
Osteoporosis is diagnosed through a Bone Density Scan using T-Scores.
Types of Osteoporosis:
- Type 1: due to hormonal changes, especially the loss of oestrogen. Oestrogen is Bone Protective. Women not on HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) should consider using a Calcium Supplement. As studies have revealed a significant increase in bone loss following the decrease of oestrogen levels associated with Menopause.
- Type 2: linked to a dietary deficiency of Calcium and Vitamin D.
- Type 3: caused by chronic medication drug treatment for other diseases e.g. Anticoagulants, Chemotherapy Drugs,ย Thyroid Medication and long-term Corticosteroid (Cortisone) use.
What to Look for in the Best Collagen Supplement in South Africa
Firstly, what is Collagen?
Collagen is a protein that your body produces to help build bones, skin, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and cartilage. It is essentially the glue that helps keep your body together. As you age, your body produces less collagen. This can result in weaker bones, aching joints, wrinkling and sagging of the skin, muscle weakness, and brittle hair and nails. Taking a collagen supplement helps remedy these issues.
The Different Types of Collagen
There are three types of collagen most prevalent in your body.
- Type 1 Collagen is the most abundant of the three. It helps build your bones, muscles, ligaments, and tendons. It also maintains skin hydration and elasticity, and it strengthens your hair and nails.
- Type 2 Collagen is the most important component for healthy cartilage, which is the firm, but flexible, connective tissue between your joints, like your knees and elbows. It is responsible for the smooth movement of all joints.
- Type 3 Collagen is similar to Type 1. It mostly helps build your muscles, bones and also blood vessels.
If you are looking for the best collagen supplement in South Africa, consider a supplement that has both Calcium and Type 1 Hydrolysed collagen. Hydrolysed simply means that your body can absorb the collagen better. Better absorption means your body can more easily derive the full benefits of collagen.
Among other benefits, a Calcium and Type 1 Hydrolysed Collagen supplement is especially beneficial for bone health. Calcium is needed to make your bones strong. Bone strength is crucial but if they are not flexible, they can still crack, shatter or break. The combination of Calcium and Type 1 Hydrolysed Collagen provides bone flexibility. Having strong and flexible bones means that they can better absorb the impacts of daily life.
Opti-CAL and Flexi-CAL are both nutritional supplements that contain the combination of Calcium and Type 1 Hydrolysed Collagen for bone strength and flexibility.
