Interesting Facts:

What is a Stretch Mark?

A stretch mark occurs when the middle layer of the skin becomes overstretched to the point of tearing and the deeper skin layers show through, forming the striae. These tears cause scars that appear as stretch marks on the skin’s surface. Stretch marks appear as red or purple lines that are slightly raised initially but over time, they turn white or silver and become flat and shiny. Women have been proven to be more prone to stretch marks than men, with them usually developing on the breasts, buttocks, hips, stomach, thighs, and upper arms.

Stretch marks usually occur:

  • During pregnancy
  • During the growth spurts of adolescence
  • After weight gain or weight loss
