Iron Supplements for Anemia

FerOvance is an Oral Iron Supplement that contains Red Blood Cell Boosting nutrients      such as Chelated Iron, Active Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate), Active Vitamin B12 (Methylcobalamin), Active Folate (Vitamin B9 as 5-Methyltetrahydrofolate) and    Vitamin C. FerOvance is formulated to assist in Iron Deficiency Anemia and Nutritional Deficiency Anemia. The benefit of using the Activated Forms of Vitamins such as Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate, Methylcobalamin and 5-Methyltetrahydrofolate is that they can be used by the body immediately without having to undergo very complex metabolic processes such as with synthetic vitamins.

Anemia occurs when either the level of Red Blood Cells or the level of Haemoglobin in your Red Blood Cells is lower than normal. Haemoglobin is essential for carrying oxygen to all the cells, tissues and organs within your body. If you have low Haemoglobin levels it means that the cells, tissues and organs in your body will not be getting enough oxygen. Anemia can have many causes, including certain diseases or conditions, medications, as well as nutrient deficiencies in Iron, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12 and Folate.

Oral Iron Supplements are used to treat Anemia. Taking an Oral Iron Supplement with added Vitamin C has been shown to enhance Iron absorption, which is why it is often recommended that you take your Iron Supplement with a glass of orange juice. FerOvance is an Oral Iron Supplement that additionally contains Vitamin C in it to aid in Iron Absorption.

FerOvance has been formulated with the key nutrients essential in the formation of healthy red blood cells. The nutrients as contained in FerOvance are Chelated Iron, Active Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate), Active Vitamin B12 (Methylcobalamin), and Active Folate                  (5-Methyltetrahydrofolate) are in their most bioavailable form to increase their absorption in the small intestine. FerOvance covers a wide range of Anemias because of its comprehensive and convenient formulation.

FerOvance contains Amino Acid Chelated Iron (as Ferrous Bisglycinate) – the chelated Iron is in the ferrous form for optimal oral Iron absorption. Chelated Iron does not bind to inhibitors in the stomach, enhancing its absorption. It also causes fewer gastrointestinal disturbances (like nausea, constipation, and black stools) than conventional Iron salts found in many other oral Iron supplements.

FerOvance contains Methylated B- Complex Vitamins – Folate, Vitamins B6 and B12 in their active state. The body can absorb and utilise these active nutrients faster than synthetic forms to support Red Blood Cell production.

FerOvance also contains 250 mg of Vitamin C to enhance Iron absorption.

FerOvance is an Oral Iron Supplement that can be used by women in their 2nd and 3rd Trimesters of Pregnancy in the case of a diagnosed Pregnancy-Related-Anemia. In your 2nd and 3rd Trimesters of Pregnancy, the blood volume doubles and in some cases a woman can become anaemic. It is in these cases of Anemia, that your Gynaecologist / OBGYN or Healthcare Professional may recommend that you take an additional Iron Supplement like FerOvance together with your Pregnancy Supplement like Stellar-Mama or Preggy-Mama.

FerOvance also makes use of vegan-friendly capsules and is a suitable Iron Supplement for Vegetarians and Vegans.

Iron Supplements for Pregnancy

Why is it sometimes necessary to take an Iron supplement for pregnancy?

Iron supplementation during pregnancy is essential for the health of both the mother and the developing foetus. Pregnant women require approximately 30 mg of elemental iron per day to meet the increased demands of extra blood volume, the developing placenta, and growing fetus. Taking an Iron supplement for pregnancy can help reduce the risk of low birth weight, maternal anemia, and Iron deficiency. It is recommended that pregnant women take a daily prenatal vitamin containing Iron. However, some women may need additional Iron supplementation, especially those with low Iron levels at the start of pregnancy, carrying twins or triplets, or those who started taking Iron late in pregnancy.

Benefits of taking an Iron supplement for pregnancy are:

– Reducing the rate of iron-deficiency anemia and nonanemic iron deficiency at term.

– Lowering the risk of adverse outcomes, such as preterm birth and low birth weight.

– Improving maternal and infant health.

It is important to consult your Doctor / Healthcare Professional to determine the appropriate dosage and duration of Iron supplementation based on individual needs. Additionally, it is essential to monitor Iron levels regularly to ensure the health and well-being of both the mother and the baby.

The key benefits of Iron Supplements

Iron supplements are commonly used to treat or prevent iron deficiency anemia, a condition in which the body lacks enough iron to produce sufficient red blood cells. Iron is an essential mineral that plays a crucial role in various bodily functions. Here are some key benefits of iron supplements:

1. Treatment of Iron Deficiency Anemia: Iron supplements are primarily prescribed to individuals diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia. This condition can lead to fatigue, weakness, pale skin, and other symptoms due to a lack of hemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen in the blood. Iron supplements help replenish iron stores and improve hemoglobin levels, alleviating anemia symptoms.

2. Improved Oxygen Transport: Iron is a critical component of hemoglobin, which binds to oxygen in the lungs and transports it to various tissues and organs throughout the body. Ensuring an adequate iron supply helps maintain proper oxygen transport, supporting overall health and energy levels.

3. Increased Energy Levels: Treating iron deficiency anemia with supplements can lead to increased energy levels and reduced fatigue. As the body’s oxygen-carrying capacity improves, individuals often experience improved stamina and reduced feelings of tiredness.

4. Enhanced Cognitive Function: Adequate iron levels are essential for proper brain function. Iron supports cognitive functions such as memory, concentration, and mental alertness. Treating iron deficiency may help improve cognitive abilities.

5. Improved Immune Function: Iron is necessary for a healthy immune system. It supports the production of white blood cells, which play a crucial role in defending the body against infections and illnesses. Ensuring sufficient iron levels can help bolster immune function.

6. Support for Red Blood Cell Production: Iron supplements promote the production of red blood cells (erythropoiesis). This is vital for maintaining a healthy circulatory system and preventing anemia.

7. Prevention of Iron Deficiency: In some cases, iron supplements are recommended to prevent iron deficiency before it progresses to anemia. This may be necessary for individuals at higher risk, such as pregnant women, individuals with heavy menstrual bleeding, or those with certain medical conditions that can lead to iron deficiency.

8. Treatment of Other Medical Conditions: Iron supplements may be prescribed in certain medical conditions, such as chronic kidney disease, where iron metabolism is disrupted. They can help manage iron levels and improve overall health.

It’s important to note that iron supplements should only be taken under the guidance of a healthcare professional, as excessive iron intake can lead to iron overload, which can have adverse health effects. Iron supplements may also cause side effects, including gastrointestinal discomfort, constipation, and nausea. Therefore, it’s essential to follow your healthcare provider’s recommendations regarding dosage and duration of iron supplementation.

Why do people take iron tablets?

Iron tablets are often recommended for individuals with low Iron levels or Iron
deficiency anemia. Iron is essential for the production of haemoglobin in red
blood cells, which helps carry oxygen throughout the body.

Taking Iron tablets can help increase the levels of Iron in the body, thereby improving symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath that are associated with Iron
deficiency. It can be especially beneficial for women, individuals with gastrointestinal disorders, those following a vegetarian or vegan diet, and people with blood disorders such as Thalassemia or Sickle Cell Anemia.

However, it’s important to take Iron supplements only, when necessary, as excessive Iron intake can lead to serious health issues. Therefore, it’s crucial to consult your Doctor / Healthcare Professional to determine the appropriate dosage and duration of Iron supplementation based on individual needs and to monitor Iron levels regularly to avoid potential harm.

Iron Supplements for Women

Iron supplements can be particularly beneficial for women, especially those who are pregnant or experiencing menstruation. Iron is a crucial component of haemoglobin, a protein responsible for transporting oxygen in the blood, and is essential for various other processes within the body. Iron supplements can help women maintain adequate iron levels, which can support overall health and prevent conditions such as iron deficiency anaemia.

Some key benefits of Iron supplements for women include:

  1. Pregnancy: Iron supplementation during pregnancy can help reduce the risk of low birth weight, maternal anaemia, and Iron deficiency, ensuring the health of both the mother and the baby.
  2. Athletic Performance: Iron deficiency is common among female athletes, and Iron supplements can help improve energy levels and athletic performance.
  3. Vegetarian / Vegan Diets: Women following plant-based diets may struggle to meet their daily Iron requirements. Iron supplements can help ensure adequate iron intake.
  4. Menstruation: Women experiencing heavy menstrual periods may benefit from Iron supplementation to compensate for blood loss.
  5. Chronic Diseases: Individuals with certain chronic diseases may require additional Iron to support their bodies’ needs.

It is essential to consult your Doctor / Healthcare Professional to determine the appropriate dosage and duration of Iron supplementation based on individual needs and to monitor Iron levels regularly to avoid potential health issues.

Yes, you can take Iron vitamins while pregnant.  Iron is an important mineral in Pregnancy. During pregnancy, your blood volume doubles and so do your requirements of Iron and other minerals and vitamins for Red Blood Cell Formation. Pregnancy related Iron Deficiency Anemia is a common condition that occurs in pregnancy and Iron supplementation is often recommended. An Iron Supplement such as FerOvance can be taken in Pregnancy if prescribed by your Healthcare Professional.

Yes, Iron vitamins can help with Iron Deficiency Anemia. If your Anemia is not caused by Iron Deficiency, then you will need to take other Vitamins like Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12 or Folate (Vitamin B9). FerOvance contains both Iron and B-Complex Vitamins and thus can be taken for an Iron Deficiency or B-Complex Deficiency Anemia

Yes, certain Iron vitamins can cause black stools. Ferrous Sulphate is a cost-effective oral Iron salt used in many cheaper Oral Iron Supplements. This form of Iron is known to have gastrointestinal side effects like nausea, constipation, and black stools.

You do not need a prescription for oral Iron Supplements. There are over the counter oral Iron supplements that you can buy without a prescription. However, it is recommended that you first test for an Iron Deficiency before supplementing with additional Iron. Intravenous (IV) Iron does need a prescription from a doctor as this type of Iron is delivered into the body by infusion with a needle into a vein.

Anemia is a condition in which the blood doesn’t have enough healthy Red Blood Cells to carry oxygen to the body’s organs, or the level of Haemoglobin in your body is lower than normal.

There are different types of Anemia:

Iron Deficiency Anemia, known as a Microcytic Anemia

This form of Anemia is characterised by small Red Blood Cells which have reduced quantities of Haemoglobin resulting in a low Oxygen carrying capacity of the Red Blood Cells. The most common symptom is fatigue. It is usually treated with Iron. Vitamin C is important for the absorption of Iron.

Megaloblastic Anemia, known as a Macrocytic Anemia

This form of Anemia is due to a Deficiency in one of the following nutrients – Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12 or Folic Acid / Folate.

Pernicious Anemia is the inability to absorb Vitamin B12, due to the lack of Intrinsic Factor which aids in Vitamin B12 absorption, (Active Folate (5-Methyltetrahydrofolate) cannot mask a Vitamin B12 Deficiency like Synthetic Folic Acid would). This form of Anemia is characterised by large Red Blood Cells that have fragile walls which can burst under pressure. This can result in Haemoglobin being lost as well as in a low Oxygen carrying capacity of the Red Blood Cells. Fatigue is also a common symptom.

Nutritional Deficiency Anemia (NDA) is caused by a lack of Iron, protein, Vitamin B12, Vitamin B6 and other Vitamins and Minerals that are needed for the formation of Haemoglobin or Red Blood Cells. Folic Acid / Folate Deficiency is a common association of Nutritional deficiency Anemia and Iron Deficiency Anemia is the most common nutritional disorder.
