• Approximately 25% of adult South Africans have elevated total cholesterol levels, with 30% exhibiting high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, often referred to as “bad” cholesterol.
• Familial Hypercholesterolemia is a genetic disorder characterized by high cholesterol levels, particularly LDL cholesterol, leading to an increased risk of early cardiovascular disease.
• In South Africa, due to gene founder effects, Familial Hypercholesterolemia has a prevalence of approximately 1 in 80 among individuals of Afrikaner descent, which is significantly higher than the global average of 1 in 500.
• High cholesterol is a major risk factor for Ischemic Heart Disease and Ischemic Stroke. In 2000, it was estimated that high cholesterol contributed to about 59% of Ischemic Heart Disease and 29% of Ischemic Stroke cases among South African adults aged 30 and above.
